The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival for Chinese people. It carries deep cultural significance and is celebrated with great enthusiasm across China and among overseas Chinese communities.
Preparations for the Spring Festival usually start a few weeks before the actual date. Families begin by giving their homes a thorough cleaning, symbolizing the sweeping away of bad luck and making way for good fortune. This is often accompanied by shopping for new clothes and buying various festive items like red paper cutouts and couplets to decorate homes.
On New Year's Eve, family members gather for a reunion dinner, which is considered one of the most important meals of the year. Traditional dishes vary from region to region but commonly include fish (symbolizing surplus), dumplings (representing wealth), and rice cakes (indicating a higher income or position). After the meal, families stay up late into the night, watching TV programs or playing games, a custom called "shousui" which means staying awake to see the old year out and the new year in.
During the first few days of the new year, people visit relatives and friends, exchanging greetings and best wishes. Children receive red envelopes filled with money, known as "hongbao," from elders as a symbol of blessings and good luck. Streets are filled with vibrant activities such as dragon dances, lion dances, and fireworks displays, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Spring Festival celebrations, typically occurring on the 15th day of the first lunar month. During this time, people light and release lanterns, eat sweet glutinous rice balls called "tangyuan," and enjoy猜灯谜(riddles).
The Spring Festival not only serves as a time for family reunions and celebrations but also strengthens cultural ties and traditions passed down through generations. It reflects the values of harmony, prosperity, and hope for the future.
